Who We Are

  • Darren was a lifelong baseball fan and card collector who enjoyed giving away his baseball cards to whoever appreciated them. He would give his cards of Orioles players to a friend in Baltimore, and his New Hampshire-born players to the Manchester Millyard Museum. Cards4DR was a natural extension of this practice.

Darren was further inspired to share his baseball card passion with kids in the DR by an often-overlooked piece of history. The DR was one of the few countries in the world to rescue Jewish refugees from Nazi Germany during World War II, and he hoped to help honor this effort through Cards4DR. Read more about this inspiration here.

Darren passed away in 2024. Lev and Hugh are continuing Darren’s enduring legacy by building upon Cards4DR.

  • Originally from New Hampshire, Hugh now calls the Dominican Republic home, where he dedicates his time to preserving history and fostering opportunities for young baseball players. As the Chairman of the Board for Sosua75, Hugh leads efforts to share the story of how the Dominican Republic increased its admittance of Jewish refugees during the Holocaust. For many years, Hugh ran The Pitch, a batting cage in the DR for underprivileged youth.

Hugh is a former minor league pitcher in the Oakland A’s organization, and he works as a freelance baseball scout identifying talent in often-overlooked areas across the DR. Hugh created the idea of Cards4DR and laid the groundwork for its expansion. Now, Hugh distributes baseball cards to leagues and teams throughout the country, making him a driving force in Cards4DR’s operations.

  • Lev is a sophomore at Brown University. He grew up outside of Boston but has been a proud Yankees fan from the day he was born in New York City. He’s played baseball for as long as he can remember and is currently on Brown’s club baseball team.

Lev’s connection to Cards4DR is deeply personal. Darren was close friends with Lev’s mother since their college days, and their friendship gave Lev the chance to know Darren and be inspired by his work. After Darren passed away, Lev stepped in to carry on Darren’s legacy, ensuring that the mission of spreading the love of baseball, doing good in the world, and honoring the Jewish connection to the DR lives on.
